Previous editions have established this best-selling student handbook as THE cognitive psychology textbook of choice, both for its academic rigour and its accessibility. Here at Georgia Tech we do research at the forefront of that science and apply that research to important problems of everyday life. In one paper, Resnick, Briars, and Lesgold (1992) present two examples of answers that are objectively equivalent (and receive equal scores in their objective assessment scheme).

It does, of course, have the tremendous advantage of being tied to the most rapidly developing technology we have ever seen -- the computer. The disadvantage is that it is becoming harder to discriminate among theories, and to decide which theories are more or less satisfactory than others. Nesting blocks and shape sorters begin to interest babies who are constantly poking, pulling, pushing objects, testing their strength and trying to make sense out of the environment.

You might draw a diagram of the floor of the building with its corridor, the rooms along it, and the occupants of each room (see Figure 9.2a for one possibility). Simon and Gilmartin produced one version of the program with more patterns than another version (1114 patterns vs. 894 patterns) and ran both versions on board-reconstruction tasks. It is also important that we do careful empirical study of the instructional programs developed under the information-processing approach and evaluate them carefully in comparison with alternatives.

But human cognition has undoubtedly been shaped by evolution, and some cognitive differences among children are heritable, at least in part. The interactive activation model has been very influential. These mental contents differ not in terms of their source or point of origin, but in terms of their relative strength and vivacity.
