Peskin & Schroeder andWeinberg are both good references: not as easy-reading as Srednicki, but more thorough on some of the more technical subjects. An example of a wave function for a single atom is one that describes an atom that has absorbed some energy. Another application is the light emitting diode which is a high-efficiency source of light. JAMES GATES, JR.: If string theory fails to provide a testable prediction, then nobody should believe it. Instead, they are described by a wave function, which gives the characteristics only as fuzzy probabilities.

The Copenhagen "orthodox ontology" leads directly to QR2, which posits an observer-created reality in which the act of measurement gives rise to observed reality ("The moon is demonstrably not there when no one looks" — N. Any finite group is isomorphic to a certain permutation group (Cayley's Theorem). It is visually stunning, but the physics content is extremely low and the approach is excessively propagandistic. Albert Einstein, himself one of the founders of quantum theory, disliked this loss of determinism.

We invented quantum mechanics to explain small things such as electrons because our everyday understanding of the world fails to explain them. It's not something that I've concocted out of thin air. Similarly, neither detector will detect horizontally-polarized photons. In like manner, our inability to make predictions at the atomic level does not mean God cannot know or control the outcome. After all, as far as Wigner is concerned, Schrödinger's body and brain are made of atoms just like the radioactive atom, all of which will be in potential states until Wigner looks at them.

Physicist Nick Herbert, author of the fine book Quantum Reality, calls the fundamental elements that the quantum realm are composed of “quantumstuff,” a (non)substance which, in his words, “combines particle and wave at once in a peculiar quantum style all its own.” [83] Wheeler’s colleague, physicist Wojciech Zurek, refers to this quantumstuff as “dream stuff.” This quantum dream stuff, the underlying fabric out of which what we call reality─which is to say, “everything”─is made of, is what is called “epiontic.” The word epiontic is the synthesis of the two terms “epistemic” (the root of the word “epistemology,” which has to do with the act of “knowing”) and “ontic” (the root of the word “ontology,” which has to do with “existence” and “being”).
